On Nilachal Hill, Kamakhya is worshipped not through an anthropomorphic idol, but through the sacred yoni-shaped stone and spring of the subterranean sanctum. It is one of the most important Shakta and Tantric pilgrimage centres of India, and the annual Ambubachi observance gives the shrine its distinctive ritual identity.
